Women’s Golf Tournament Raises Record Support For Breast Health Center

In addition to the support from the golf teams, the event received major contributions from sponsors and donations for awards, a silent auction and a Chinese Auction. Proceeds from this year’s tournament will go toward the purchase of a third ultrasound system. In the past eight years, this event helped to raise more than $300,000 for new technology including a Titan ultrasound system, a mammotone unit, a compact digital ultrasound console and biopsy unit for MRI.

While the tournament is an opportunity to support the Center it is also a time to honor the many women who have dealt with breast cancer and who now provide support to other women and their families as they go through this disease. Speaking at the dinner following the tournament, Timothy Pagana, M.D., medical director of the Center and tournament founder, paid a moving tribute to the many women in the region who have looked breast cancer in the face and valiantly fought for their lives.

"Today these women stand as shining examples of the strength and courage of the human spirit," he told the gathering. He also noted that the event not only honors those women, but also memorializes the women who have lost their battle to breast cancer. "While breast cancer today has a cure rate of 95 percent or higher," he said, "sadly many women do not have their cancers discovered early when the chance of cure is highest. When we lose these women, it is tough for us all."
