Dysphagia/Swallowing Disorders Program
Fifteen million Americans are affected by Dysphagia/swallowing difficulties. People with Dysphagia have difficulty and/or pain when swallowing liquids, food or even their own saliva. Some people are completely unable to swallow at all. Causes may include:
While eating is a means of nourishment, it is also a social experience. Many individuals experience social isolation because they cannot eat with family and friends, causing severe depression. In addition, complications such as aspiration pneumonia, dehydration, weight loss and malnutrition can occur, sometimes leading to death. Our program’s dedicated team of specialists, led by Lawrence Tomack, M.D., rehabilitation doctor, includes speech pathologists, dieticians and occupational therapists who develop specialized care plans and direct referrals.
