There are a variety of conditions that can occur naturally in women or as a result of a number of different factors. If you are experiencing issues concerning menstruation or menopause, or have abnormal or severe pain, a doctor at Susquehanna Health can help you diagnose and treat your gynecological condition. Common conditions treated at Susquehanna Health include:
Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a buildup of tissue outside the uterus that looks and acts much like the tissue shed during menstruation. This condition can cause abnormal bleeding, which in turn, causes inflammation and swelling of internal tissues. Symptoms of endometriosis can include pain in the lower back or abdomen, pain during intercourse, abnormal menstrual flow, infertility, and fatigue.
Pelvic Pain
Acute and chronic pelvic pain can be caused by a variety of things. It occurs when there is direct inflammation or irritation of nerves, muscular contractions and cramps, or psychogenic factors. The doctors at Susquehanna Health can help to determine the cause for your specific pelvic pain and aid in starting you on a treatment plan.
Uterine Fibroids
Uterine Fibroids are compact tumors made of muscle cells and connective tissue in the uterus. Fairly common in women, almost 99 percent of these tumors are benign (non-cancerous). Treatment upon diagnosis is highly recommended, as these tumors can result in prolonged menstrual periods, abnormal bleeding, pelvic pain, frequent urination, and low back pain.
Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
PID is often caused by the same bacteria that is involved in sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Left untreated, it can cause infertility and chronic infection throughout the abdominal cavity. Treatment may include antibiotics, or occasionally, surgery. See a doctor if you are experiencing pain and tenderness in the abdominal or pelvis, fever or chills, foul- smelling vaginal discharge, vomiting or nausea, or pain during intercourse.
